  • 18th July 1918 - His father died, Mandela and was groomed for becoming chief of his local tribe
  • 1943 -  Mandela became involved in politics
  • 1952 - Mandela and Tambo opened the first Black Law firm in South Africa.
  • 1960 - South Africa was increasingly isolated on the international scene and the government banned the ANC
  • 1962 - Mandela had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Robben Island prison.
  • 10 May 1994 - Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first democratically elected State President of South Africa on and was President until June 1999
  • 1994 - Made more difficult by the HIV epidemic, which continues to cause grave problems. (Nelson Mandela recently lost his eldest son to this disease and Mandela has worked hard to campaign on this issue.)

  • In 1921 he joined the British police in Burma, however, Orwell grew dissatisfied and he resigned in 1927. In the same year, George Orwell decided to become a writer.
  • In 1936, Orwell married Eileen who unfortunately died in 1945.
  • Communists began to arrest dissenters and Orwell was forced to flee from Spain.
  • By 1938 Orwell was suffering from tuberculosis.
  • In October 1949 George Orwell married his second wife Sonia.
